It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity…Charles Dickens
It’s the best of times because I have a great career (I actually enjoy my job) at a great company, a great family, and I am about to embark on an exciting journey (for me anyway) over the next two years that that I hope leads to an exciting, yet unknowable, destination
It’s the worst of times because I’m dragging myself back to grad school while still employed and in the process of doing so, accumulating an obscene amount of debt that will need to be paid off over the next 10 years or so.
So what is this all about anyway? I guess an intro is in order.
I was born in Santiago, Chile 1971, and lived there for about 3 years until my parents decided to move to Canada. I lived near Toronto, Canada (Mississauga to be exact) for most of my life, but currently, I live in Atlanta since about 1997. I went to school at the University of Waterloo, culminating in a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with a management science option (what the heck is an option anyway?). I am married to a beautiful woman and I have two fantastic kids that are the inspiration for everything I do. I don’t have a dog or a white picket fence though (in case you were wondering).
So why the blog? Well, I recently decided to enroll in an MBA program for executives and decided to write about it. Being an engineer, writing is quite a feat for me, but I’ll leave that topic for another day. Leading up to this decision to enroll in an MBA program, I read a lot of blogs by MBA students and those applying to their “dream” schools. I found some of them helpful as I formed my perspectives along the way. So does the world really need another MBA blogger? Probably not. But what I found noticeably absent in the blogosphere that I traversed were blogs by students pursuing or enrolled in MBA for exec programs AKA EMBA programs. I have some theories about that, including generational disposition towards blogging, lack of time, lack of interest etc, but alas, I will also leave that topic for another day.
Getting back to my point, I feel there is a “market” or niche for EMBA blogs among the vast amount of MBA blogs, and this is my attempt to help fill that void. How charitable of me, huh. While I do hope that some of you find this information helpful, I guess I also have a hidden agenda in writing this blog. I figure I need a creative outlet for my thoughts while enrolled in the program, a place I can visit to articulate thoughts about the whole MBA experience as I see it. I will try to keep my pontifications generic from a program perspective, but I’m sure along the way I will refer to situations specific to my program. I will also try to be consistent by posting frequently (every two weeks at least). I’ve seen some blogs start with great promise, but ultimately wither away due to neglect. Hopefully, the same won’t happen here. In addition to posting about the MBA experience, I will make the first few postings about how I got to this point in my life, career-wise, and my thought process as I researched, visited, applied to, and finally got accepted into my target programs. Along the way if anything strikes a chord, feel free to comment or shoot me an email.
This is probably enough for now.
And so begin my musings….
